California Redwoods
The California Redwood

When trying to describe an old-growth Redwood forest, words like immense, ancient, sacred, inspirational, stately, majestic, perseverant, and enduring spring to mind. However, these words (and even these photos) fail to capture the inspirational and reverent silence that physically standing amongst these living giants elicits.

Grow Like A Redwood

Beginning from a seed slightly larger than a pinhead, the Redwood grows (for the next 600 to 2,000 years) to a height of nearly 370 feet and a diamter of 22 feet.

Survival Strategies

The bark is very thick (up to 12 inches) and chars into an effective heat shield when exposed to fire.

The chemical composition of the tree itself is distasteful or even poisonous to normal tree pests and is very resistant to water associated rot. The wood can actually withstand battery acid and still retain its shape.

Avenue Of The Giants

Weaving in and out of the forest groves, the Avenue Of The Giants is an incredibly scenic drive amonsgt these magnificent redwoods (many of which were standing here before the birth of Christ) and gives you a sense of the true feeling of majesty in this forest.

Entering Redwood National Forest is like visiting nature's cathedral. Seriously, hiking amongst these giant Redwoods and Sequoias is an experience that should not be missed.
